Half dollars have long been a favorite of coin collectors because of their beauty. The Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollar is one of our favorites of the silver half dollar coins available for two important reasons: It has a fascinating history, and it’s one of the more stunning half dollars in existence.
Much of the public found the coin that preceded Walking Liberty very unsatisfactory. As such, there was incredible pressure on the Mint to create a better coin when the time came in 1916. The Commission of Fine Arts weighed in on sketches produced by the Mint’s engraving department and chose to have several sculptors submit proposals for coins instead of accepting the Mint’s designs. As the process moved forward, the sculptors had to work through a number of barriers to finally produce this coin. The politics surrounding the production of this one coin is fascinating. Of course, the design of this coin is a huge reason to collect it too. The coin shows a full-length representation of Lady Liberty, walking toward the rising sun, with her arm outstretched to show the spirit of liberty. On the reverse of this coin, you’ll find a bald eagle perched with his wings spread. This coin is 30.6 mm in diameter and has a silver content of 90 percent.
The Walking Liberty Half Dollar was minted from 1916 to 1947, and some years are more sought after than others because the amazing details of this artwork were often hard to recreate from year to year.
